About this recipe

Chocolate & Rum balls are the one dessert that remind me of my beginner baking days. When I started learning how to bake Serbian treats, I initially referred to “easier” desserts that were easy to follow. Chocolate balls, made in a typical Balkan style with lots of crushed biscuits and sugar, are one of those recipes that I loved making and adapting. You can find this type of dessert at a festive table, paired with Kokosov Rolat, Raffaello balls, or other “sitni kolaci” / bite sized cakes. It really is a celebratory type of dessert or as a special kind of treat for when you need something quick but satisfying.

It’s important to note that these confections contain alcohol, and while the rum flavor is not overpowering, it’s essential to enjoy them in moderation. You can completely leave out the alcohol and add a different flavour instead. I added vanilla essence to the recipe as it helps cut through that alcohol taste.

Making the recipe

These Chocolate & Rum Balls are SUPER EASY to make at home. You will need a food processor for grinding the plain biscuits and walnuts. You can ground them individually or ground them both together. I would not recommend using something like a Nutri Bullet as the walnuts may end up more like paste. A food processor does a much better job. Once you have grounded down these two ingredients, add them to a large mixing bowl. Add the powdered sugar, caster sugar and mix everything together.

Now, for the wet ingredients. You will need to melt the butter and chocolate over medium heat, stirring consistently. Add the butter, chocolate, milk, rum and vanilla essence to the bowl with the dry ingredients. Begin by mixing everything with a spatula, or wooden spoon. Then, mix everything together with your hands (this is much easier).

If your mixture is overly dry, add a tablespoon of milk at a time to adjust the consistency. You are not looking for a super tough dough consistency but rather a mix that will shape into a ball if you press it with your hands.

To shape the balls, use your hands to press the batter between your palms and shape a ball. Repeat until you have used all of the batter. To decorate, roll the balls in either grounded coconut or shaved chocolate.
