A recipe for one of my favourite Serbian meals Chicken Grašak / Pea Stew with Chicken. Being a big part of my cooking repertoire, this dish is one I grew up eating often and one (amongst others) that I absolutely love. Made with onions, garlic, lots of yummy vegetables, chicken and a ton of minted peas – this dish is so comforting and wholesome. I love to cook meals that not only remind me of my childhood but ones that are also a big part of Serbian traditional cooking overall. Chicken Grašak is cooked in one pot, filled with veggies and lots of seasonings. It’s super easy to make, and if you want to make it vegetarian / posno, simply leave the meat out and fill it up with more veggies if you like.

About this recipe

Chicken Grašak / Pea Stew with Chicken is one of my most favourite childhood meals. Alongside paprikas, musaka and stuffed peppers, it really is one of my favourite meals to eat! I love to cozy up with a bowl of Grašak, especially on colder days. Sometimes I will dip some homemade bread into the soup which is just delicious!

You may have seen my very first recipe on here for Serbian Grašak / Pea Stew, which I made a while ago. However, since I cook Grašak often, I will sometimes add a different seasoning just to enrich this dish even more. Unlike my previous recipe, this recipe uses a stalk of celery, Vegeta seasoning and a vegetable based stock. I also used boneless chicken thighs, whereas the other recipe calls of chicken breast. There is not much of a difference, but I do like that the chicken thigh meat is not as thick as the chicken breast. I also used extra garlic in this dish because I love garlic and it adds extra flavour.

Other than those slight adjustments, the recipe still remains true to tradition, filled with chopped veggies and lots of minted peas. I hope you enjoy it!

2.
Cook
Add the chopped potatoes, carrots and celery. Mix everything together and add the vegetable stock and 1 L of water. The water should cover the contents of the entire pot, so add more water if you need to. Next add the Vegeta, dried paprika, marjoram, parsley, salt & pepper. Mix and cook on medium heat for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, add the minted peas and cook on medium heat for a further 20 minutes.
Taste & adjust for seasonings. Serve warm into dinner bowls. A nice side salad or fresh bread on the side pairs so well with Grašak. Enjoy!
